Three events, three different programs and one great protagonist: the music of the Italian and European nineteenth century. Messina enters the heart of the VI edition of the Bellini International Context with the concerts scheduled for 17, 26 and 29 September, all at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, with free entry, without reservations, until seats are sold out.
Free admission represents one of the distinctive features of the Bellini International Context, an event promoted by the Sicilian Region – Department of Tourism, Sport and Entertainment through the network of nine prestigious cultural institutions.
There are over 30 free entry events planned as part of the event: a precise choice to encourage public participation, broaden the audience of residents and visitors and use culture as a lever for the development of cultural tourism.
It starts on Thursday 17 September at 9pm with Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini: the great opera symphony, starring the Orchestra of the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele of Messina, conducted by Samuele Galeano. The evening offers three pages by Bellini – from the Symphony from Adelson and Salvini to the Capriccio and the Symphony from I Capuleti ei Montecchi – alongside famous symphonies by Rossini (La Cenerentola, La gazza ladra) and Donizetti (La Fille du régiment, Roberto Devereux).
At the centre, Bellini’s path: from the Capriccio composed during his Neapolitan studies, to the first theatrical experience of Adelson and Salvini, up to the full maturity of I Capuleti ei Montecchi. This concert thus becomes a journey into the history of the opera symphony, but also an opportunity to closely observe the progressive definition of Bellini’s language: from his Neapolitan training to his first theatrical experiences, up to the full awareness of the relationship between orchestra and drama.
The second appointment is Saturday 26 September, at 9pm, with “Bellini and his time”, with Francesco Ommassimi on the podium. Also starring are the soprano Gilda Fiume and the tenor Dave Monaco, engaged in a program dedicated to Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, to tell through music the artistic and cultural context in which the extraordinary parable of the Catanian composer developed. The Messina triptych will close on Tuesday 29 September, at 9pm, with the concert by the “Giuseppe Sinopoli” National Youth Orchestra, conducted by José Jesús Olivetti. Also on stage are the soprano Giuliana Di Stefano and the violinist Vikram Francesco Sedona, for a program that will range from Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Mendelssohn, comparing some of the great personalities of Italian music with the European symphonic repertoire.
THREE CONCERTS, AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE
The Messina proposal also becomes an invitation to experience the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele and the city through great music, with three evenings that combine operatic repertoire, symphonic music, great performers and young talents.
The only exception to the free entry formula is represented by the performances of the opera I Puritani, scheduled from 23 September to 1 October, which will be held in Catania, at the Metropolitan Theatre, which will however be possible to attend at reasonable prices and with discounts for students.
The Bellini International Context thus confirms its vocation to bring great music outside the traditional circuits, building a dialogue between heritage, entertainment and territory and offering the Sicilian public and visitors a calendar of high-level events. The event is organized: Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania, Theater of Messina, Sicilian Symphony Orchestra Foundation, Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation, the Music Conservatories of Catania, Palermo and Messina, University and Archdiocese of Catania.
Three dates to mark on the calendar: 17, 26 and 29 September. Three opportunities to listen to Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi and Mendelssohn live, with leading performers and orchestras. And with an extra element: free entry.
