Between depopulation and demographic crisis. What future lies ahead for Reggio?

«A few days ago I participated with interest in the event celebrating the hundred years of Confindustria of Reggio Calabria in a crowded Cilea Theatre. Certainly a timely event, which marks and underlines the achievement of an important goal and of which each of those present was able to appreciate the organizational effort.” The lawyer’s analysis starts from this premise. Massimo Canale, ideologist and creator of Onda Orange, the movement that wants a new Reggio based on a shared idea that starts from the bottom.
«The interventions of industrialists and politicians – highlights Canale – were limited to celebrating the flattering results achieved in the Reggio and Calabrian production sectors, even if no one focused on a crucial issue for the future of our city constituted by the dramatic demographic decline which highlights a galloping aging of our population with consequent gradual emptying of Reggio and its provincial territory. Our young people now live far from Reggio and in most cases do not return, finding the right recognition of their work potential elsewhere. The overall picture of the meeting celebrating the centenary of Confindustria therefore returns a partial analysis of the dynamics linked to productivity and development which does not take into account the fact that the positive results that Confindustria communicates to us people of Reggio today are part of a highly recessive context from a demographic point of view with the effect of nullifying, in the medium and long term, any prospect of development and growth”.
