Calabria brings its vision of sport to the heart of Europe. This morning, in the European Parliament, the Region was the protagonist of a high-profile institutional meeting, made possible thanks to the invitation of the Hon. Giusi Princi, promoter of the initiative which saw the participation of the European Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glenn Micallef. The regional councilor for Sport, Eulalia Micheli, took part in the meeting, together with: Alessandro Londi (FIDAL), Francesco Ettorre (FIV), Cecilia Morandini (ASC), Fabio Colella (FIV), Tino Scopelliti (CONI Calabria), Antonio Eraclini (ASC), Walter Malacrino (Sport and Health Calabria) and Antonello Scagliola (CIP Calabria).

The initiative had the objective of representing the needs of the territories to the European Commission, through Commissioner Micallef, and of launching a shared strategy to strengthen Calabria’s role in national and European sport.

“For our region – declared Councilor Micheli – this is a fundamental step: we intend to make sport not only a competitive field, but a driver of culture, tourism and valorisation of the territory. Despite limited resources and infrastructural problems, we want to adopt a new working method, based on collaboration and on a European vision capable of transforming limits into opportunities”.

The contributions that emerged during the discussion will be brought to the permanent table on Sport, recently established by councilor Micheli as a place for operational and participatory planning, with particular attention to the dissemination of new disciplines, the promotion of training experiences and the construction of educational paths aimed at young people.

“Sport – he continued – has a fundamental educational function: it teaches discipline, respect, resilience and the value of defeats as opportunities for growth”. A clear message comes from Brussels: Calabria intends to invest in sport as a tool for development, inclusion and social cohesion. “We will continue this path with enthusiasm and responsibility – concluded councilor Micheli – counting on the support of president Roberto Occhiuto, who particularly cares about the future of Calabria and the construction of a narrative based on real and positive results”.
