Catanzaro, the numbers of a magical vintage

The numbers do not convey emotions, but they manage to frame a season well, even more so when it is of a very high level like that of Catanzaro. From Iemmello to Aquilani, from Pigliacelli to Pittarello, among those who contributed to getting one goal from Serie A there is not one who limited himself to making an appearance. The first is the coach, who signed the new record for Giallorossi victories in a single Serie B season: 18 out of 43 games, 15 in the championship and three in the playoffs. The common thread that unites this season to the previous three (in B and C) is Iemmello: with the brace against Palermo in the semi-final the captain became top scorer for the fourth year in a row, narrowly surpassing Pittarello: 13 goals to 12, then Catanzaro with two players in double figures.
Iemmello and Pittarello are the men with the highest expected goals, i.e. the expected goals based on the chances had: 15.35 for the captain, 14.10 for the Venetian center forward. Staying with individuals, Pigliacelli is the most present player: 42 out of 43 games in Serie B (excluding another in the Italian Cup), 4,161 minutes on the pitch with 104 saves and 12 clean sheets, including three in the playoffs.
Second in appearances and minutes (41 matches, 3,831′) is Favasuli with an always very high performance. The Calabrian winger who today faces the first friendly match in National A against Luxembourg has crossed more than anyone else (almost 100 times) and has five assists (not a few), only the third for winning serves: first place goes to Iemmello, who delivered ten, second with seven belongs to Pontisso, who is however the one who created the most scoring opportunities (69).
For expected assists, Iemmello should have signed only 4.72: it means that to get to ten he practically invented many of them with magic. Cassandro is the most incisive defender with goals (four) and assists (three), the winter reinforcement Esteves the least used player (78 minutes). Antonini, with almost 91%, is the one who has completed the most passes and won the most duels (63%) counting those who have played more than 15 matches (otherwise Bashi is at the top with 74%, but has only been seen on the pitch seven times). For the Brazilian there is also the highest number of defensive clearances (the only one above 220), Pontisso is the player with the most balls played (just under 2,600). Pittarello shot more than anyone both overall (85) and between the posts (33) and is, like last year, the one who committed (63) and suffered (97) the most fouls.
As a team, like Monza, Catanzaro sent 20 different players to the net (none more). Of the 70 goals scored (never so many in Serie B in Giallorossi history) 16 were headed, the top together with Empoli. The 26 goals from dead balls are the second best figure behind Frosinone’s (as are the 13 from corners). The 12% making rate is the highest in the tournament. As for magic, there is no number that matters: it is immeasurable, regardless of the ending.
