Three months to secure the most vulnerable areas, three years to complete the entire intervention. In Santa Teresa di Riva, the works to protect the coast from erosion caused by the sea are ready to start, designed by the Municipality since 2014 and financed in 2019 by the Region with 10.6 million euros. Works that should have started before the devastating cyclone Harry last January, as admitted on 20 February by the President of the Region Renato Schifani on the occasion of the handover of the construction site, and which would probably have avoided the extensive damage caused to the seafront by the storm.
Studies and analyzes have continued for years to identify the best model to protect the Santa Teresa coastline and in 2021 the intervention was contracted for 8.7 million euros to the “Ciro Menotti Consortium” of Ravenna, which delegated the consortium members “Edilap” and “Cospin”. A contract managed by the commissioner structure for combating hydrogeological instability, led by president Schifani and the implementing body Sergio Tumminello. The intervention will affect a 3.3 kilometer long coastline, largely classified as R3 and R4 hydrogeological risk, where from 1982 to today the coastline has progressively retreated by approximately 35 metres.
