Worrying microbiological anomaly detected in the Angitola river, in Maconi locality, where Arpacal recorded Escherichia coli levels equal to 13,000 UFC/100 mla value that indicates a significant faecal contamination, completely incompatible with the environmental standards provided for surface waters.

The report comes from the regional agency for the protection of the environment of Calabria, which on Sunday 29 June carried out an extraordinary surveillance activity in the territory of Maierato, with samples in three strategic points: Lake Angitola, Fiume Rescia and precisely Fiume Angitola – Maconi locality.

While the values found in Lake Angitola (11 UFC/100 ml) and in the RiScia river (42 UFC/100 ml) are widely compatible with non -contaminated waters, the situation of the Angitola river immediately activated the verification protocol. An additional sampling has already been prepared and notifications have started to the competent territorial bodies for evaluations and any interventions.

At the same time, the chemical analyzes carried out on the sample taken from Lake Angitola by the Arpacal laboratory of Catanzaro have excluded the presence of dangerous substances: ammonia, nitrites, surfactants, cods and metals all were inferior to the detectability limits, confirming a good chemical state of the waters.

The agency has confirmed that monitoring will continue carefully, in line with the strategic objectives aimed at protecting biodiversity and river ecosystems and lake of Calabria.
