This is what the president of the 5 Star Movement Giuseppe Conte said, speaking at the Festival del Sud – Valentia in Festa, presenting his book “A new spring. My story, our values, the progressive challenge for Italy”, interviewed by Il Fatto Quotidiano journalist Luca De Carolis.
«If we don’t agree on a shared program – added Conte – and we don’t hurry up and allow these dissatisfied people to recognize themselves in the figure of a single candidate who speaks and represents everyone, we risk finding Meloni another five years. Meloni says: we are making the history of this country. But do you know how he’s doing it? With fuel at +25%; insurance at +30%; rents at +20%; bills at +60%; motorway tolls at +15%; food spending at +30%; TV license fee at +15%: this is the story they are making. Our radicalism is necessary, we must transform this country.”
On the riots in Milan and the safety decrees, Conte added: «If you destroy the property of a poor worker, obviously you have to answer for it. But the crime is already there, the compensation is already foreseen. There is even a rule that requires parents to be held accountable for damages caused by their minor children. But it’s from 1942, we don’t have to invent anything. We must counter violence, of course, and if on the left there are problems admitting it, then we have not understood each other, because this concerns all citizens. At the same time, however, we must recognize that a government that was supposed to guarantee security as a primary good did not do so. And the great obscenity are the eight safety decrees issued. Because if you introduce eight decrees, 50 new crimes, 47 aggravating circumstances, increased sentences, etc., it means that you are inadequate, because with each decree you demonstrate your inability. The Meloni government must go home.”
On the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the former prime minister added: «Wars end either with a peace treaty or with the definitive surrender of one of the two warring parties: do we want to get to this? If we want to defend Ukraine, we can only defend it in a way that should have been done for some time: by calling the entire international community (including Brics) around a table and forcing Putin to accept conditions that are dignified for Ukraine. I will not name a mediator for the conflict now, it would mean burning him. Send us to the government and we will make that name.”
In the finale, stimulated by the interviewer, Conte reported the first measures he could take if he were to return to the helm of the government. «First decree: the following laws are repealed: followed by the list of all the infamous rules on justice introduced by the Meloni government and all the security decrees; second decree: in Art. 1: the Italian State recognizes the State of Palestine, Art. 2: the Italian State unilaterally interrupts the military cooperation agreement with Israel; Art.3: the Italian State adopts economic sanctions against the State of Israel against Netanyahu, all the ministers and all those responsible for the genocide in Gaza”.
