The mayor Federico Basiletogether with the councilor for the enhancement of the fortified heritage Enzo Carusomet at Palazzo Zanca with the representatives of the Messina forts Cavalli, Petrazza, San Jachiddu, Serra La Croce, dei Centri and Puntal Ferraro (delegation), with the aim of relaunching the Coordination of the Forts of the Strait, aimed at a joint action of valorisation and promotion of the Fortified System, within the Euro-Mediterranean network of fortified cities.
The path was reactivated in April 2019, during the De Luca Administration, with the signing of the Corfu Charter – “Lighthouse that unite” Convention. Lighthouse for the Forts”, signed by the municipalities of Messina (leader), Reggio Calabria, Campo Calabro, Villa San Giovanni, by the Inspectorate and State Forestry Company, by the Universities and Superintendencies of Messina and Reggio, together with the Associations managing the Forts of its banks.
Following the COVID period, the program underwent a long period of halt which, next October, will be relaunched with the establishment of the “Heritage Community of the Forts of the Strait”, promoted by the MEDFORT Study Center, with the objective of aggregating institutional subjects and the third sector for the European recognition of the Fortified System of the Straits, a unique architectural, environmental and cultural heritage in the Mediterranean.
During the meeting, mayor Basile and councilor Caruso launched the proposal, accepted by those present, for the organization in October of a calendar of autumn Sundays for the joint opening of the Messina Forts Cavalli, Petrazza, San Jachiddu, the Centers and Puntal Ferraro, to be extended in November also to those of Siacci (Matiniti sup.), Poggio Pignatelli and Gullì (Arghillà), home of the Ecolandia park.
