Cosenza, long negotiations in the center-left to resolve the issue of the Province

A long confrontation, which continued for hours, in search of a coalition unity that was difficult to achieve. The indication of the candidate for the presidency of the Province saw the political forces that make up the so-called “wide field” divided.

The crux of the candidacy in the center-left

The former president of the organization, Franco Iacucci, tried with all possible diplomatic and conciliatory arts to recompose the picture in the name of a Democratic Party determined to focus on the mayor of the capital, Franz Caruso. Overcoming the reluctance and untying the knots, however, proved to be a long and arduous undertaking.

Caruso, for his part, has underlined from the beginning that he is “available” to take the field, but only on condition that his candidacy is the result of a “unified choice”.

And getting everyone to agree is not easy. The prospect of “inconveniences” and “transversalism” would weigh – as implied by eminent exponents of the coalition – on the ongoing negotiations. The disharmony of the center-left can only favor political opponents in elections of this type.

Compact centre-right, Lega and Southern Italy form a square

In the centre-right, meanwhile, Southern Italy and the League set the record straight by strengthening their alliance. The parliamentarian Simona Loizzo and the regional councilor Orlandino Greco state:

«Despite their mutual political and identity autonomy, the League and Southern Italy share the need to move within a compact centre-right, avoiding fragmentation and favoring a serious and constructive debate. The ongoing evaluations concern both the profiles in the field and the method with which to reach a synthesis that takes into account the needs of the territories and local administrators. It is, therefore, a phase of listening and analysis which will lead in the next few days to decisions consistent with the overall political framework and with the dynamics of the coalition, in compliance with the indications that will emerge from the internal discussion.

The provincial elections – continue the two political exponents – represent a delicate passage, in which the ability to summarize and the weight of institutional relations become central. It is in this direction that the League and Southern Italy are orienting their work, with the aim of contributing to a shared and politically responsible solution.”

It now remains to be seen who the presidential candidate will be.
