A gesture of attention and humanity put an end to a painful event that had aroused indignation and emotion. The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, personally intervened to resolve the case of a mother from Donnici who, since February 2025, had been awaiting the burial of her daughter’s remains, which remained unplaced after the exhumation.
The woman had entrusted her pain to an open letter published on social media, addressed to the mayor, denouncing the long wait and asking for a gesture of respect towards the memory of the little girl. Caruso, having learned the news, went to the Donnici cemetery on Sunday 1st November to meet her in person, assuring her of immediate intervention. The burial took place on Wednesday 5 November, in the presence of the mayor himself, who wanted to be next to his mother in the long-awaited moment.
«Dignity has been restored to the memory of a little girl and a minimum of comfort to the pain of a mother – declared Caruso -. I renew my deep closeness and reiterate the bitterness I felt as soon as I learned of the matter.”

“We need more efficient management of cemeteries”

The mayor then addressed the broader issue of the management of city cemeteries, recognizing that “critical issues and delays in ordinary and extraordinary maintenance times remain”, but rejecting the idea of widespread degradation: “The much criticized delimitations – he explained – demonstrate ongoing work to improve the functionality and accessibility of the places, including the resolution of historical problems such as lighting”.
Caruso announced that measures will be taken to improve the timeliness and quality of services, urging the relevant sectors to pay greater attention and coordination.
«It is an unavoidable need – he concluded – to guarantee efficiency in community services, which I expect to be ensured». A concrete commitment, therefore, to transform individual pain into an opportunity for reflection and change in the administration of essential public services.
