After completing the territorial reform, the director of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, Roberto Alesse, continues its strategic activities by visiting the various territorial offices of the ADM. Today, in fact, Alesse went to Calabria to get to know the activities and staff of this strategic regional directorate. A complex structure which, managing a vast and diversified territory, daily faces peculiar challenges linked to its geographical position and widespread phenomena of organized crime. After meeting the staff of the General Affairs Office, the Customs Office of Reggio Calabria and Roccella Jonica and the Territorial Operational Section of Reggio Calabria of the Calabrian Monopolies Office, the director went to Gioia Tauro, where he also greeted all headquarters staff.
Alesse then visited the delicate area reserved for scanner checks and container inspections. The port of Gioia Tauro has, in fact, become the Italian hub of reference in the maritime transshipment sector in just a few years. Currently, 1,500 container ships arrive there per year, some with transport capacities exceeding 24,000 containers, i.e. ships that few ports allow to dock due to the high draft of their hulls. Almost all customs operations throughout Calabria take place in this port, which is also equipped with an automotive terminal.
“In this Region, our offices represent a fundamental safeguard of legality, they carry out considerably complex activities and collaborate with other state, control and police bodies, to ensure compliance with the law. In the next few days I will also go to Sicily, the South represents an enormous resource and must be enhanced with the necessary skills to make it increasingly competitive” declared Alesse during his visit.
