On possible interventions to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices, the government will intervene with the mobile excise duty. «To activate this system, however, we must wait for the Ministry of Economy’s calculations on the VAT extra revenue for the month, which will only be available next week, and which will determine the amount of the possible cut».
This was stated by the Minister of Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, in an interview with Corriere della Sera. «With the extra VAT revenue – adds Urso – it will be possible to cover the reduction in the excise duty, while for any other measures other coverage would have to be found». “If the resources are found, alongside the cut in excise duties, which has general effects – underlines the minister – targeted measures could be taken, as we have already done for road transport with the tax credit”. In the Council of Ministers scheduled for 4 August, “we will be able to make an assessment of the available resources”, states Urso. As for the possibility that there may be speculation on the price of fuel, the minister states: «We have a control and monitoring system which is copied from other countries and which has proven effective, given that in our country fuel prices have increased less. The reforms pay off. This is why I say that we must not limit ourselves to the emergency, but also carry out structural interventions, such as the rationalization of the network of distributors envisaged by the draft law on competition” and on this point he adds: “We want to start immediately, to complete the modernization in 5 years”.
