In the crazy climate, at the end of August, in the wine-growing area of Cirò and Melissa DOC, the harvest of the grapes of the traditional vines was already in full swing: Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco and Greco Nero, Malvasia.
The few grapes that escaped the drought that also hit the Crotone area and its agricultural crops were brought to maturity at the cost of a lot of effort and money. The lack of rain has forced winemakers to “assist” the vines with continuous watering cycles: an extreme but essential measure, especially in hilly areas, to at least save the plants.
The lakes of “Giama”, in the territory of Cirò, were already dry at the end of June. A climate change that requires consequent actions. Hence the request of the winemakers to the “Politics” «to put in place infrastructural solutions to resolve the problem of water shortage with the construction of large reservoirs». An appeal that unites the entire agricultural world of Crotone which, continues, also to pay the price for the excessive proliferation of wild boars; although the collection centers of the ungulates killed in Cirò Marina and Crotone are working at full capacity.
