The EU Economy Ministers, according to what we learn from European sources, have reached an agreement on the new Stability pact.
Me too’Italytherefore, agreed on the new rules on Stability pact. European sources explain that Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, speaking of a “spirit of compromise”, said he was in favor of the proposal on the Stability Pact. in the new Stability Pact, added the Italian minister, «there are some positive things and some less so. However, Italy has achieved a lot and above all what we sign is a sustainable agreement for our country aimed on the one hand at a realistic and gradual reduction of the debt while on the other it looks at investments especially of the Pnrr with a constructive spirit”.
Melons: important compromise. Improvement agreement
The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, considers it important that a common sense compromise has been found among the 27 EU member states for a political agreement on the new Stability and Growth Pact. This is what we read in a note from Palazzo Chigi.
«Despite very different starting positions and needs between the States – he continues – the new Pact is an improvement for Italy compared to the conditions of the past». «Less rigid and more realistic rules than those currently in force, which avoid the risk of an automatic return to the previous parameters, which would have been unsustainable for many member states. Thanks to a serious and constructive approach to negotiation, Italy has managed, not only in its own interest but in that of the entire Union, to provide gradual mechanisms for debt reduction and recovery from the high deficit levels of the Covid period”, look at the note again.
Schlein, the agreement on the Stability Pact will hurt Italy a lot
«Meloni puts a big mortgage on the future: the Stability Pact is a bad compromise for Italy. Why Italy was absent in the negotiations: Italy accepted the agreement of France and Germany with its head down. We should have fought harder. If we go back to rigid quantitative parameters it is as if we have learned nothing from the pandemic. They should have fought much sooner and I think this is an agreement that will do a lot of harm to Italy.” The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein said this to Tg2 post.
The new Stability Pact will come into force in the spring of 2024 if the final stages for its approval are concluded positively. This was declared by the EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni. To finalize the agreement, “there is no time to waste”, explained the vice president of the EU Commission Valdis Dombrovskis at a press conference.
