The Sicilian socialists and social democrats who have cultivated the autonomy of the reformists in recent years, at the end of a meeting held in Palermo, decided to relaunch the political presence of the Sicilian Socialist Party. Refounded in 2013, the PSS has never dissolved in recent years, maintaining its organizational continuity even in the periods in which it chose to federate with other subjects from the secular-socialist and reformist area.
The leadership of the PSS received a mandate from its members to sign a federative pact with the Italian Democratic Socialist Party, led by the national secretary Paolo Preti. The decision follows recent jurisdictional rulings which confirmed the historical and legal continuity of Giuseppe Saragat’s Rising Sun headed by the PSDI and its leadership group elected a year ago.
By virtue of the agreement, the regional secretary Antonio Matasso will represent the Sicilian Socialist Party, founded by exponents of the Saragatti diaspora and the Garofano, within the national leadership of the PSDI. PSS members will also also join the Social Democratic Party, acquiring its membership card.
The federation pact provides that Matasso will operate as regional secretary of the PSDI and responsible in Sicily for the original symbol of Palazzo Barberini. The custodian of the historical mark at a central level is the national secretary Paolo Preti, invested by the 2025 social democratic congress.
At the time of signing the agreement, Preti and Matasso wanted to renew their homage to the figure of Emma Bonino and remember Professor Giuseppe Barbaccia, who had just passed away, a well-known Sicilian socialist intellectual and for years a professor in the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Palermo.
