Following the resolution, the mayor of Messina Federico Basile issued today, April 30, 2025, the ordinance that establishes the prevention measures against forest fires and interface for the current year, in the period from 15 May to 31 October 2025. The measure falls within the strategic initiatives for the protection of the environment, the safety of citizens and for the mitigation of fire risk, aggravated by the increasingly extreme and favorable climatic conditions for the development and propagation of the outbreaks.

During the period indicated above, it is absolutely forbidden, unless otherwise authorized, to leave waste or herbaceous residues near wooded or bushy areas; Turn on fires, use free flames or devices that can generate sparks or embers; smoking or throwing butts from vehicles in transit; use fireworks in unauthorized areas; Burn stubble, pruning and brushwood residues.

Among the obligations for citizens constant cleaning of uncultivated soils, with removal of brushwood, brambles and dry vegetation; compliance band of at least 20 meters free from fuel vegetation along the roads and 10 meters around buildings and systems; removal and deposit of the vegetable materials resulting from the cleaning operations.

Controlled combustion of agricultural residues is allowed only from 15 May to 30 June and from 1 to 31 Octoberexclusively upon communication to the competent forest detachment and in compliance with specific safety conditions (including hours 5-9, distance from bush areas, constant supervision and daily quantity limited to 3 m³/hectare).

The same junta approved the adaptation of the amount of the administrative sanctions provided for violations. The provision, proposed by the Councilor for Civil Protection Massimiliano Minutoli, was born from the will of the municipal administration to strengthen the contrast and prevention tools, also in light of the numerous fires that hit the territory in the last summer season, causing huge environmental damage and risks for public safety. The amount of the administrative sanction, in case of reduced payment, was set to the maximum extent allowed by current legislation: 500 euros.
