Calabrian food craftsmanship is a sector that combines tradition, quality and ability to compete on the markets. This is what emerges from the analysis of the MPI Observatory of Confartigianato Imprese Calabria, which photographs a solid, widespread and growing sector. In the month of December – we read in the report – Calabrian families spend an estimated 565 million euros on food and drink products, equal to 3.2% of national spending. Holidays significantly impact consumption habits: considering the three-year period 2022–2024, 10% of annual sales of food products are concentrated in December, with a value 21.6% higher than the average of the other months of the year. At the provincial level, spending is distributed with 213 million euros in Cosenza, 154 million in Reggio Calabria, 104 million in Catanzaro, 49 million in Crotone and 45 million in Vibo Valentia, demonstrating a widespread impact on the entire regional territory.
On the production side, the Observatory reports, the craftsmanship in the food, drink and catering sectors has 2,694 active companies in Calabria, which employ 8,503 workers. The sector represents 11.6% of the total regional artisan businesses – the second highest incidence at a national level – and 16.5% of artisan workers.
