There young man who drove the Opel Mokkathe car involved in the terrible accident in which he lost his life Francesca Mandarino (the 21-year-old Sapienza student, originally from Mandatoriccio in the province of Cosenza) would have resulted positive for alcohol test. Also from Calabria and 21 years old like Francesca, that evening she would have driven the car with a blood alcohol level of 0.92, above the permitted limit of 0.50. This was revealed by the Roman newspaper Il Messaggero.
The student was investigated for vehicular homicide and very serious injuries, following the results of the test carried out at the Tor Vergata polyclinic. The speed of the car at the moment of the tragic impact is not yet known. The car, like the Fiat 500 with which the terrible collision occurred, was seized to allow a technical assessment to be carried out to ascertain the speed at the time the accident occurred.
Seven other university students were injured in the accident, which occurred on Friday at two in the morning in Via Tiburtina. When the officers of the II Sapienza group arrived on site, they found a scene of blood and sheets of metal. Five other friends (two girls and three boys, despite the car being approved for five) were traveling on board the Opel Mokka, together with the 21-year-old driver. The impact occurred on the Portonaccio bridge against a Fiat 500, with two 22-year-old Roman students on board. The SUV overturned several times, and Francesca’s body was thrown out of the passenger compartment. Already from an initial investigation, the 21-year-old driver had appeared positive for alcohol, confirmed by the strong odor found in the car by the local police. The investigators also reconstructed the dynamics: the Mokka was proceeding at high speed and, suddenly finding himself in front of the small car, he was unable to avoid it.
Francesca’s body returned to Mandatoriccio, the center of the Ionian Cosentino last evening. The funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday 21 November at 3.30 pm in the church of Saints Peter and Paul.
