The Notam on the limitation of aviation fuel to 3,000 liters at Reggio Calabria airport «was a note of protection to limit the supply by carriers who came to Reggio to increase it given that there was no availability at other airports such as Bologna, Venice, Treviso and Linate». This was stated by the sole director of Sacal, the management company of the three Calabrian airports, Marco Franchini, speaking to ANSA and underlining that “at the moment there is no problem for the Calabrian airports”.

«It was a limitation – he added – to allow our small depot which is 230 thousand liters to be able to cope with those four days which for me are essential to regularly supply the companies that operate at the airport. It is clear that the critical situation affects the entire world of air transport.

The most important companies, I don’t know Ryanair, Ita, all have fuel hanging contracts, which essentially protects the cost of fuel, the cost of jet fuel. But if the oil tankers don’t arrive from the Strait of Hormuz and the depots don’t fill up, the storage will also come to an end.” «I believe – said Franchini – that for the entire month of April there will not be any type of problem, but I hope solutions will be found because from May we could have serious repercussions on an issue that has doubled the cost of fuel. So it will certainly have repercussions on ticket costs. However, as of now, the cost of fuel has already occurred and what I estimate is an increase. Then there is the issue of operational limitations because an airline will have to think, for example, by giving priority to some connections considered strategic, also due to load factors, over others. This is the theme.”
