Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, Calabria is called to the polls for the referendum. The first time was 79 years ago. It was June 2, 1946 and Italy was asked to pronounce on the institutional form of the state. In essence, he had to choose between the monarchy and the Republic. In total, 24,946,878 Italians voted, equal to 89.08%. In Calabria, they went to 900,635 seats entitled (85.56%, it was the historical peak). As for the result, in Italy the Republic conquered success (54.27% against 45.73% raked by the monarchy), but In Calabria the verdict was overturned: 60.28% chose the monarchy while 39.72% voted convinced for change.
Throughout history, the referendum has alternated returns characterized by high participation (10 times) with consultations for a few intimate (14 times). It is the result of a story of abuse of political promises which was followed by the inevitable collapse of credibility that is found in the turnout data that continue to flex over time. A negative trend that has consolidated, above all, in the third millennium with 10 consultations without quorum.
