The Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos Grenadiers) won the first stage of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint, the Venaria Reale-Turin, of 140 kilometres. The race favourite, Tadej Pogacar (UAE), finished in third place. According to Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe).
The joy of the winner
“I felt good, we knew it could be a good stage for me, of course we had to follow one of the best riders in the world, in the end I managed to get ahead of Pogacar. The pink shirt? It's incredible, I've always thought that there are no great opportunities for a runner with my characteristics to wear it. I had dreamed of it, but a lot of work was needed to make this dream come true.” The Ecuadorian runner declared this.
