The “Vermiglio” road goes uphill towards the night of the Oscars. Maura Delpero’s film, included in the shortlist of films nominated for the statuette, was excluded from the list of winners on the night of the Golden Globes which reserved to Italy only one, modest, satisfaction: the recognition of the soundtrack for “Challengers” by Luca Guadagnino.

“Emilia Perez” by Jacques Audiard dominated the Golden Globes, winning four trophies, including best comedy in an evening characterized by the triumph of “The Brutalist”a portrait of a Holocaust survivor architect trying to rebuild his life in the United States and who was awarded three statuettes.

Awarded at Cannes and broadcast by Netflix, “Emilia Perez” scored 10 nominations and lived up to its favorite status: in addition to the main prize, this musical odyssey about the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker won the prize for best foreign filmthe one for the best supporting actress for Zoe Saldana – nothing to do for Karla Sofia Gascon who would have been the first trans to win as best actress – and that for the best song for the French artists Camille and Clement Ducol, authors of the original soundtrack.

Demi Moore won the award for best actress in a comedy for his very committed performance in the French film, “The Substance”. In this dark tale by Coralie Fargeat, which doesn’t skimp on blood, the 62-year-old actress plays a former Hollywood glory addicted to a youth serum. A substance that generates a rejuvenated double of itself, with destructive impulses. Demi Moore admitted that she was afraid of becoming an older actress and thanked for “this magical, bold, courageous, unconventional, completely crazy script”, which allowed her to finally be recognized during a big ceremony. “I’m in shock,” she said, “I’ve been an actress for a long time, more than 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve won something.”

Broadcast from the Beverly Hilton on CBS in a live broadcast punctuated by commercials on the new anti-weight drugs, the evening proved Audiard right, but also Brady Corbet, awarded for directing The Brutalist together with the protagonist Adrian Brody. Corbet, who invoked the director’s rights to make epic films like his, was the only one of the evening who sent a message of condolence to White Lotus actress Aubrey Plaza, whose husband, director Jeff Baena, took his own life last Friday in Los Angeles.

If Vermiglio has disappointed so far, Challengers by Luca Guadagnino won a Golden Globes for best original soundtrack. Wicked was recognized as box office champion, a category established last year after the Globes were acquired by the new management taking over from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Fernanda Torres of Io Non Sono Qui (awarded for the screenplay at the Lido) in surprise beat stars like Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet and Pamela Anderson for best actress in a drama. Sebastian Stan received the Globe for A Different Man as best actor in a musical/comedy, but not for the Apprentice, the film about a young Donald Trump for which he was also nominated.

Flow – A World to Save won as best animated feature film. Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, it was selected to represent Latvia at the 2025 Oscars in the best international film section. The Golden Globes also award statuettes for TV. It was Shogun’s evening (best drama series and three acting awards to Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano), while Hacks (Jean Smart and best comedy/musical series), Baby Reindeer (best comedy series) were also awarded limited and best actress Jessica Gunning), The Bear (Jeremy Allen White) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell).
