The CEO of the Washington Post, Will Lewis, has resigned after the controversy following the approximately 300 layoffs at the prestigious newspaper owned by Jeff Bezos. The same newspaper announced it. Lewis said he made this difficult decision “to ensure a sustainable future for The Washington Post.”

He had been hired by Bezos, at the beginning of 2024, with the aim of transforming the newspaper and putting an end to years of financial losses and declining readership. He resigned just days after the company cut its staff by 30%, sparking criticism from current and former Post employees. Marty Baron, the Post’s acclaimed former editor, called it one of the “darkest days in the history of one of the world’s greatest news organizations.” Lewis will be replaced by Jeff D’Onofrio, the newspaper’s former chief financial officer.
