A small mountain town that becomes a laboratory of healthcare innovation. In Longobucco, in the heart of the Greek Sila, the first remote electrocardiogram was carried out in telecardiology: a concrete signal that local healthcare can change pace even in internal areas. The announcement came directly from the Municipality’s institutional page, with a message that speaks of a “historic result” and the “beginning of a new era for the territory”. Words that are confirmed by facts: the ECG tracing was performed on site and reported remotely, thanks to a telemedicine system that connects the local unit with the ASP’s cardiology network.

The vision: “Sila Protetta” as a model for mountain municipalities

Leading this transformation is the Commissioner of the Provincial Health Authority of Cosenza, Vitaliano De Salazar, who defined Longobucco as “the test bed for a broader project”. «The Sila Protetta project has begun, aimed at mountain municipalities – he explained -. Longobucco represents the starting point of an experiment that brings together Asp, municipal administration and citizens. We shared a clear operational protocol: opening an advanced clinic, activating telemedicine and building participatory healthcare.” The model is not limited to technology. In fact, alongside the remote ECG, structural and training measures are planned: installation of defibrillators in the area, BLSD courses for operators and citizens, launch of the “Sila Cardio Protetta” project by March. «It is not just an additional service – underlined De Salazar – but a new organization of assistance, which reduces distances and shortens intervention times. A unique experiment in the Center-South and beyond.”

From geographical distance to digital proximity

For an area like that of Sila, where the orography affects travel times and access to hospital facilities may require complex transfers, telecardiology represents a paradigm shift. The first remote ECG is not just a symbolic record: it is the demonstration that healthcare can truly become “proximity” even in the mountains. Remote reporting allows for immediate specialist evaluation, with potential benefits in terms of early diagnosis and management of cardiovascular emergencies.

An institutional and civic alliance

The heart of the project is collaboration. Asp, Municipality and local community have signed a shared path that aims to strengthen the emergency-urgency network and promote a widespread culture of first aid. With the launch of the BLSD courses and the installation of defibrillators, Longobucco is aiming to become a cardioprotected municipality, capable of intervening promptly in the most critical moments, awaiting the arrival of advanced help.

A laboratory that looks beyond Sila

The challenge now is to transform the experimentation into a replicable model. If the Longobucco experience gives the expected results, “Sila Protetta” could be extended to other mountain municipalities in the province of Cosenza, helping to reduce the gap between urban and internal areas.
