Prevention has no borders, it crosses the sea and, from Sicily, reaches Lipari. The “Humanitas for the Aeolian Islands” initiative, on 17 and 18 October, promoted by Humanitas Istituto Clinico Catanese and COT Istituto Clinico Polispecialistico, recorded an extraordinary participation: over 100 visits in two days, thanks to the commitment and availability of the medical team and staff, who also welcomed those who were unable to book in order to guarantee further and important possibilities for a check-up. On Friday and Saturday, in the spaces of the COT Aeolian Polyspecialist Clinic in Lipari, free breast and urological visits were held, dedicated to women and men born or resident in the seven islands of the archipelago. An initiative that brought prevention to the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea, bringing Humanitas even closer to the Aeolian Islands.
“An activity like that of Humanitas which offers its services to the population of the Aeolian Islands is very important. Screening activities are fundamental for the health policies of the regions, therefore encouraging and cultivating them means doing a great job for the health of our Region” – explains Marco Ferlazzo, President of COT Istituto Clinico Polispecialistico -. “It was also essential to meet family doctors, institutions and those who work on the topic every day. The objective is to offer patients new specialties, guaranteeing the highest healthcare quality and a complete treatment path.”
“We are very satisfied with the result of this initiative – states Corrado Malandrino, General Director of COT –. It was important to be able to bring the skills of our centers closer to the population of the island”.
Special thanks go to all the staff of Humanitas and COT and to the doctors: the breast specialists Debora Fichera and Maria Gloria Marino, the radiologist Francesca Panarello, the urologists Angelo Navarra and Giorgio Lo Giudice, and the physiotherapist Michele Farchica.
For the Vice Mayor of Lipari, Saverio Merlino, who arrived at the COT together with the Councilor for the Territory Giovanni Iacolino, “an initiative like this is an important moment for the islands and the archipelago. There is a need for healthcare, and these two days offered by Humanitas represent a fundamental opportunity to bring citizens closer to prevention, especially in territories where services are more limited. Public health is a precious asset and must absolutely be protected”.
“The success of the initiative confirms the validity of the path shared between Humanitas Istituto Clinico Catanese and COT, created to offer specialist care and skills even in smaller contexts. Doctors and staff worked with great team spirit to respond to the numerous requests received, with participation well beyond expectations”, these are the words of Giuseppe Sciacca, CEO of Humanitas Istituto Clinico Catanese and COT. With “Humanitas for the Aeolian Islands”, the Humanitas network continues its commitment to spreading the culture of prevention throughout Sicily, starting from the places where it is most necessary to be there.
