“This morning in court I testified as an injured party at the hearing of a defamation trial that arose from a complaint I made a few years ago for continuous and very serious insults received via social media“. This is what Giuseppe Falcomatà, mayor of Reggio Calabria, stated in a post on Facebook.
“This is the first time this has happened. I have never taken personally the insults and invectives that I occasionally read on the web, but at a certain point I think a dam needs to be put in place.
On social media you can read everything: violent comments, death threats, insults, arguments, invectives from serial haters against everything and everyone. It is a worrying trend that cannot go unpunished. And I say this mainly for the many children and young people who witness this shameful public spectacle every day. But what kind of society are we telling them about? What are we teaching them? What model are we proposing to them?
The web is a very useful tool but it must be used with care and responsibility. What we write has consequences: the words, photos and videos we post become public and can potentially reach anyone. I believe that respect for others and for ourselves should never be lacking, even more so when faced with a keyboard and a screen that amplify our thoughts. Moreover, kindness is something absolutely free. And keyboard lions almost always end up in cages”.
