«I submitted a written question to the President of the Regional Council Roberto Occhiuto to find out whether the Masterplan for interventions to mitigate coastal erosion, drawn up in 2014, has been updated in light of the interventions carried out, their effects and the light of the new and further erosive phenomena recorded in the ten years following its drafting; the detailed implementation status of the interventions relating to GR resolution no. 355 of 07.31.2017; the specific status of the planning and financing of the interventions originally planned in the Ricadi-Joppolo-Nicotera section; the updated state of use of all the funding provided for in the 2016 Framework Program Agreement, as well as that of the Southern Apennines District Basin Authority and that directly attributable to the Region such as the FSC or the POR with precise indication of the resources committed , of those already spent, of those remaining to date”. This is what the regional councilor and president of the Mixed Group – Freely Progressives reports in a press release Antonio Lo Schiavo.

«The question – explains Lo Schiavo – arises from the need to understand the state of the art of interventions planned for several years now, in light of the fact that the erosion phenomenon continues to make its harmful effects felt along all the Calabrian coasts and, above all, on the Tyrrhenian side where some of the main tourist locations in the region are concentrated. In this regard, I thought it appropriate, once again, to point out how the progressive increases in erosive phenomena that have occurred in the last two years have generated a particularly alarming situation along the entire Vibo coast, which represents the point of greatest advancement of the tourist economy, with important areas such as Pizzo, Tropea, Ricadi, Joppolo, Nicotera who see increasingly larger stretches of their beaches gradually disappearing. On the other hand, continuous appeals from mayors, individual entrepreneurs and trade associations have been repeated for some time, even in the press, reporting an extremely delicate and alarming situation. Considering that the Department and the Regional Basin Authority have prepared a “Masterplan of coastal erosion risk mitigation interventions in Calabria” which dates back to 2014; that the aims of the interventions contained in the Masterplan were the subject of the Framework Program Agreement signed between the Calabria Region, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea; that, again, with a resolution of the Institutional Committee in 2016 the coastal erosion basin plan (Psec) was adopted and with a resolution of the Regional Council of 07.31.2017 the interventions to defend the soil using the Por funds were indicated, which envisaged the safety of 43 kilometers of coast by 2023, I therefore considered it necessary to ask the Council this question to understand the progress of the interventions already defined for a long time”.
