«Hooligans must be punished without any ifs or buts, it is wrong to be justificationists. However, condemnation must not be a point of arrival, condemnation of violence is a starting point. The people who take to the streets aren’t just angry with the government, they’re angry with their time. Many times these are young people who do not have a perception of a possible future for them.” Roberto Occhiuto, president of the Calabria Region and deputy national secretary of Forza Italia, said this to the microphones of l’Agenda on SkyTg24.

«When I was a boy, despite belonging to a working class family in my city, I thought I could have a possible future. Today many of these young people – he observed – can no longer imagine their future. And this is much more serious than the simplifications that are often made when these protests are exploited by thinking that they are protests against the government, against the high cost of living.”

«The high cost of living – the FI exponent underlined – is not due to the government, but to two wars about which the government has been able to do little. What happens in Italy also happens in France, what happens in France also happens elsewhere, and therefore there is probably a policy that more generally is perhaps unable to read the new social fractures. Then – concluded Occhiuto – when hooligans, even if they are minors, break a shop window to steal fashionable shoes, they must be punished and they must be punished without any discount”.

In FI, I believe the discussion of ideas is producing good results

In Forza Italia «I believe the discussion of ideas is producing good results. I read about the proposals that Tajani is bringing to the government table and I agree with them all, I have also written about some in my book. The congress will take place when Tajani decides but, as far as I’m concerned, I was re-elected president of the Region last year and I have four years ahead of me to lead my Region.”

With Vannacci it would be a leap into the past

«With Vannacci it would be a leap into the past and I believe that the center-right should not do this, it should not pursue populism. It must certainly strengthen the more liberal area, more attentive to intercepting the future, without being hostage to a past that no longer exists, which is that of Vannacci. Which, among other things, seems like a media phenomenon to me.”

«Elections – observed Occhiuto – are held not to win them but to govern the country. The complexity of the challenges we face requires a government coalition that is cohesive, as the center-right has been in the last five years and as the center-right has been every time it has governed, this would not be the case with Vannacci.”
