«I am very happy that Mark is here, it is right that the European Political Community works with friendly partners and we approve of it. But I believe, and it is Italy’s point of view, that we should focus much more on our Mediterranean neighbors for example, it is obviously fundamental for us in these times when attention is focused on the geographical space of the wider Mediterranean.” Giorgia Meloni said this while taking part in «Maintaining European unity and coherence in times of polycrisis» at the Epc.

“The world is facing multiple interconnected crises. Challenges that must be addressed at European level”

«The world is not just facing multiple crises but multiple interconnected crises that feed on each other. We cannot address individual aspects of these crises but manage them as a whole”, added Meloni, who gave the example of immigration which “is not only exploited as a hybrid threat but also affects the economy, putting a strain on public resources and weakening the labor market, and increases uncertainty and social tension”. Meloni then recalled that many migratory flows come from regions “key to our energy supplies”.
This uncertainty, continued the Prime Minister, “erodes the quality of democracy because when trust in institutions erodes, citizens become more vulnerable”. “No one can face alone” this type of challenge, which must be faced “at a European level”, as the latest interventions on immigration have demonstrated, concluded Meloni.
