A symphony of styles that makes it an extraordinarily interesting place from a historical-artistic point of view. It is the beautiful crypt of the cathedral of Messina, a suggestive sacred space, full of charm. Inside there are columns and capitals of the Hellenistic period, fragments attributable to the Norman era and works of the following centuries, up to the triumph of the Sicilian Baroque. Due to a significant flooding, The crypt was closed to the public for many years. But now she is ready to reopen exactly tomorrow. By now the safety and recovery works are completed, curated by the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Messina, the crypt will be returned to the Archdiocese and the city tomorrow, in the context of the solemn celebrations in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the letter.
Restoration interventions have allowed the consolidation of stuccos and frescoes, the installation of what remains of the Norman and seventeenth -century floor, the construction of the lighting system and, above all, the positioning of an important catwalk that will allow the use of the crypt also and above all to disabled visitors.
The works, financed by Sicilian regionhave been directed by the architect Mirella Vinciformer Superintendent of Messina.
The inauguration will take place tomorrow at 11.45, in the presence of the archbishop Giovanni Accolla, the Prefect Cosima di Stani and the mayor Federico Basile.
