Messina, World Stroke Day: prevention and information at the town hall on 29 October

The prevention of stroke and chronic non-communicable diseases will be at the center of the event promoted by the ASP of Messina, in collaboration with the Uosd Stroke of the University Hospital and with the municipal administration, on the occasion of World Stroke Day on 29 October. The initiative will be held from 9am to 1pm in the atrium of the town hall and aims to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of early diagnosis and correct lifestyles to reduce the risk of stroke and limit long-term disabilities.

Every year 12 million people in the world are affected by stroke, and according to data from the World Health Organization, 80% of cases are preventable by intervening on the main risk factors. The Messina event, included among the activities of the Global Stroke Action Coalition, is part of the regional project “Screening of chronic non-communicable diseases” and also includes an area for vaccinations, created in collaboration with the vaccination center of the Uosd hospital hygiene of the Polyclinic, directed by Cristina Genovese.

During the meeting, speakers will include, among others, the mayor of Messina Federico Basile, the general director of the ASP Giuseppe Cuccì, the councilor for social policies Alessandra Calafiore, the medical managers Giuseppe Ruggeri and Eliana Tripodo, the neurologist Laura Rosa Pisani, the stroke expert Maria Ruggeri, the director of the screening management center Rosaria Cuffari and the director of the stroke unit of the Policlinico Antonio Toscano, who will report on the phenomenology of stroke and prevention.

Also expected are speeches by Salvatore Sidoti, Cristina Genovese and Chiara Schirò, director of the “Educate and promote health” operational unit. The morning will conclude with the personal testimony of Gianluca Rossellini, ASP press officer and institutional communication specialist, who will talk about his direct experience with the disease.
