Sunday 18 May officially begins the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, per century Robert Francis Prevost. The contemporary artist Alexsandro Palombo wanted to pay homage to the first American pope of history with a mural with a strong visual impact and full of meanings. Entitled “The American Dream”, the work appeared at the entrance of the fifteenth century Church of Santa Maria near San Satiroa few steps from the Milan Cathedral. For the first time, Pope Leo XIV is immortalized in a work of public art: in the mural, the Holy Father is portrayed supported by the arms of the statue of freedom, which raises him forcefully towards the sky. In his right hand, the Pontiff holds the torch, eternal symbol of reason, beacon of hope and freedom, recalling the “American dream” and his principles of solidarity, equality and welcome, engraved in the famous sonnet of Emma Lazarus.
