The divers of the underwater operating group (Gos) of the diving command and raids of the Navy (Comsubin), detached from the SDAI (Small Defense Difference Difference Inference) of Augusta, have led delicate underwater operations in the insidious waters of the Strait of Messinaat the localities Bolano, Acciallo (RC) and along the Costa Messina. The reporting of the presence of bombs was communicated by a diving company engaged in preventive investigations as part of the Bolano-Annunziata project, an energy supply work (underwater cables) that will connect Messina and Reggio Calabria. On behalf of the Prefectures of Messina and Reggio Calabria, the Palombari of the Navy developed a plan for the reclamation of the bombs, located in depths between 35 and 40 meters. The bombs were subsequently recognized as 4 bombs by plane 500 pounds, 3 plane bombs with 250 pounds and a large -caliber project, for a total of 8 pieces, all dating back to the Second World War. The operations, which began on February 26 and definitively ended on April 10, proved to be extremely complex, with technical difficulties that requested particular attention. Environmental factors have significantly influenced the performance of the operations: diving at relevant shares, strong currents and adverse weather conditions have put a strain on the palombarians engaged in the field. To make the intervention even more delicate was the type of bombs, a plane bombs “armed” with spolets inserted, which required a careful process of removing, trailer and destruction to ensure the safety of underwater operators and the surrounding community. The reclamation has left nothing to chance: each phase was carefully planned through effective coordination that saw the involvement of the staff of the Port Authorities and the naval department of the Guardia di Finanza of Messina and Reggio Calabria, in order to guarantee an adequate safety framework. The population has been informed through press releases that involved citizens, avoiding alarmism and guaranteeing maximum safety. In the long term, operations of this type bring tangible benefits to the local community. The removal of war residue improves the safety of the area, also promoting the relaunch of maritime activities, from tourism fishing. Specifically, the elimination of war residues will allow the safety of the underwater cables of the Bolano-Annunziata electrode, a new infrastructure that will increase the interconnection capacity between Sicily and the continent up to 2,000 MW, contributing to the development and integration of renewable sources in Southern Italy. In addition, the connection will improve the electricity grid, increasing operational flexibility and ensuring greater safety for the electrical systems of the South and the island. It is good to remind anyone who can find objects that by forms and dimensions can recall an explosive device or parts of it, which these artifacts can be very dangerous and therefore must not be touched or tampered with in any way, immediately denouncing the discovery to the local port authority or to the nearest Carabinieri station, so as to allow the intervention of the marina’s palumbarians in order to restore the safety conditions of our sea, lakes and rivers.
