A fire, the second in the space of two weeks, broke out this afternoon in Filicudi, in the Timpone area, the highest part of the island. The flames, driven by the strong wind that blew yesterday on the Aeolian Islands, quickly spread, getting dangerously close to the homes.
To deal with the advance of the fire and to avoid significant damage, despite the few means available, it took all the effort of the carabinieri of the local station, the members of the municipal civil protection group and some young islanders .
The final balance is a couple of hectares of spontaneous and native vegetation that went up in smoke. Furnishings located near the homes were also burned: but given the wind there was a huge risk. There is very little doubt that the fire was arson. The Carabinieri have started investigations into the case to identify those responsible.
