They were newlyweds from Messina on their honeymoon in Ragusa when, on 30 August 2017, they were found unconscious, intoxicated by carbon monoxide in their hotel room. They were saved. Three defendants were acquitted in the first instance for not having committed the crime on the charge of causing very serious bodily harm. Now there is a battle between experts and consultants in the appeal process before the Court of Appeal of Catania, first criminal section (president Mignemi, alongside the Council, and Scardillo). The three defendants are Angelo Gulino, owner of the De Stefano Palace hotel (defended by the lawyer Fabrizio Cavallo), Nunzio Cilia as executor of the installation work of two boilers installed three years and one year before the incident (defended by the lawyers Maurizio Catalano and Biagio Giudice) and the design engineer of the heating and water systems Francesco Minardi (defended by the lawyer Guglielmo Barone); the process involved the company Antiqua hotels Group snc – owner of the structure – as civil liability, whose legal representative is Giuseppe Greco (represented by the lawyer Massimo Garofalo). The two spouses had formed a civil party through the lawyers Lorella Pipicella, Gianluca Novak and Carmelo Scillia. The professionals’ reconstructions were so conflicting that the Court deemed it necessary to schedule a further hearing for a discussion between experts and consultants before closing the hearing.
