“I have decided to renounce my availability to cover the role of Sports Expert for the Municipality of Messina”. The announcement is from Cristina Correnti, president of FIP Sicilia, who in the last administrative elections was a candidate in one of the lists labeled South calls North. “I sincerely thank the mayor Federico Basile for thinking of my name and for the trust that his proposal represented – continues Correnti, in a long post published on social media -. It was a gesture that I appreciated and which made me reflect carefully before arriving at this decision”. The subsequent considerations, however, represent an important message on the sports policies of the municipal administration: “In the period between the proposal and today, however, I have had the opportunity to learn more about the methods, approaches and perspectives with which the topic of sport is addressed. This path has led me to understand that my way of conceiving, organizing and managing sport is not reconcilable today with the approach that I have had the opportunity to observe. For me, sport is not just activities, events or management of the existing. It is above all planning, vision, attention to young people, to clubs, to the facilities and the people who work every day to build a true sporting culture. When accepting a role, I believe it is necessary to do so with conviction, sharing objectives, method and responsibility. It would therefore not be fair towards the Administration, the sporting world and above all towards myself to accept a role in which I do not fully recognize my way of working. I will continue, as I have always done so, to make passion, competence, ideas and experience available to sport, in the contexts in which I believe I can make a concrete contribution consistent with my values. Sometimes saying “no” – concludes Cristina Correnti – is simply the most correct and respectful way of being faithful to one’s idea of sport”.
