The data on compensation for unjust detention “are manifestations of the defeat of the State”, figures that “constitute a burden of pain and a financial burden”. Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said this while responding to question time in the Chamber.
From the data communicated by the Mef, the Minister of Justice explained, the compensation “paid for compensation for unjust detention amounted to 26.9 million euros in the entire year 2024”, while from 1 January to 31 October 2025 “535 applications were accepted for a total amount paid by the Treasury of 23,850,925 euros”.
In particular, the minister reported in the Chamber, the highest figures are recorded at the Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria – with 77 compensations paid for 5,486,000 euros – and at the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro (126 compensations for an amount of 4,311,000 euros), followed by Palermo and Rome. Nordio also explained that he had asked for an addition to the Mef “to find out how many compensation requests were filed during 2025”: the outcome of the investigation received today, he added, indicates that “during 2025 – data updated to 25 November – 913 requests were received by the Department of General Administration of Personnel and Services”.
