“Enough with all this controversy, here’s the truth about car tax.” The president of the Calabria Region and national vice-president of Forza Italia, Roberto Occhiuto, intervenes on the controversy relating to the stop on car tax, launched by the Council of Ministers, with a video released on social media in which he intends to clarify: «Let’s give to Giorgia what belongs to Giorgia, to Cetto la Quale what belongs to Cetto and to Silvio what belongs to Silvio». The reference to “Cetto” concerns Pasquale Tridico, centre-left candidate in the last regional elections who, during the electoral campaign, had announced his intention to suspend the tax in Calabria for those who “pay a car tax of up to 250 euros with an ISEE of up to 25 thousand euros”. The proposal had been attacked by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who had compared it to the proposals of Cetto La Quale. After the government’s provision Tridico and the centre-left have made, controversially, reference to this episode.
Occhiuto explains that Meloni «was right», because «the car tax cannot be abolished by a regional president, by law the Regions cannot do it. The tax can only be abolished by the government. If the Regions could abolish it, they would create huge budget holes in their accounts. Giorgia Meloni abolished car tax, giving the Regions the resources they previously collected through this tax. So thank you Giorgia because you did a good thing for the citizens and also for the Regions.”
