“Those who have operated against people, not respecting human rights, detaining people only for political convictions, occupy important institutional roles. Those who have helped, on the other hand, risk ten years in prison. It is the reversal of things”. This was stated by the MEP of the Left group, Dominic Lucanreferring to the judicial affair of the minister Matteo Salvini, during a press conference held this morning in Crotone in support of the Iraqi-Kurdish activist Maysoon Madjididetained for 9 months on charges of aiding illegal immigration, whose trial resumed today before the Court.
“I don’t want to sink to the same level as Salvini – added the MEP – who was raging against me when I was arrested, but that raging gave me more strength to fight. He is a character, as I must say, known for his extremism precisely because he rages against people. First his political ideology and that of his group was against us southerners. We have seen the narrative of hatred that they had for us southerners. Then came the round of foreigners, non-EU citizens, illegal immigrants against whom the League raged. But in your opinion what else does the League have – asked Lucano – if not these fundamentalisms of hatred first against southerners and now against immigrants? They build everything in function of this”.
“Now he is accused – concluded the mayor of Riace – because he did not respect human rights for the role he had. But I tell you the truth, I do not want to stoop to his level. I am never happy to talk about the misfortunes of others. There is an aversion on my part towards all the policies of hatred, of inequality, of wishing the worst. I am not interested”.
Lucan on Iraqi Kurdish activist Maysoon Madjididetained for 9 months on charges of aiding illegal immigration whose trial resumed today in court, said: «The Piantedosi law on immigration is wrong because it keeps in prison a girl who helped other refugees survive during the journey at sea». «Maysoon does not deserve to be detained – Lucano explained – she has done something more, she fights for the respect of human rights, of people who are in difficulty. And I am here today precisely because I have been through these things and I know that the world falls on you, you see yourself in prison, locked up, without having done anything. The paradigms are overturned».
The MEP then recalled the shipwreck of migrants that occurred in Steccato di Cutro in February 2023 in which 94 people died, including many children. «This government in Cutro has reached its lowest point. It has exposed the cynicism of the right: while the funeral chapel was still there, a birthday was being celebrated. What is the point of talking about spread, GDP or economic aspects when there is no respect for even a single human being? The phenomenon of migration concerns human beings who move to seek alternative solutions to their conditions: they are fleeing from wars or repression, because there is poverty or disease. We are all human beings, only we never identify with the difficulties. It is easy to order, to say: I am holding many people prisoner on the basis of my political beliefs. But these are political beliefs that are based on the absolute lack of respect for human rights. And the case of this Iranian Kurdish girl is emblematic. Human rights are not respected. It is not only Hungary that does sensational things” concluded Lucano.
