The Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office of Reggio Calabria has formalized the appeal to the Review Court “in reform of the order issued by the investigating judge Vincenzo Quaranta on June 3, 2024” and has requested the order of precautionary custody in prison against the two politicians at the center of the “Ducale” investigation and 7 other suspects. The appeal, signed by the Reggio Calabria prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri, the additional prosecutors Walter Ignazitto and Stefano Musolino and the prosecutor Salvatore Rossello, concerns Giuseppe Neri and Giuseppe Sera, respectively – at the time of the facts – group leader of Fratelli d’Italia in the Regional Council of Calabria and group leader of the Democratic Party in the Municipality of Reggio. Both are under investigation at large and the Reggio Calabria DDA had already requested the arrest of the same investigating judge, but had not obtained it. The arrest was also requested for Daniel Barillathe young and enterprising member of Sambatello’s PD who was for the investigators a “vote collector” for left-wing and right-wing candidates, and a supporter of the electoral campaign of mayor Giuseppe Falcomata (also investigated in “Ducale” without any request for a measure by the Public Prosecutors). Daniel Barillà, initially hit by the measure of house arrest, is now burdened only by the obligation to sign as established by the Review Judges. The appeal of the Prosecutor’s Office also concerns Domenico Araniti “the Duke” (already in prison for “Ducale”) believed to be at the top of the Araniti di Sambatello ‘ndrangheta gang, limited to two further charges; Ignazio Borruto, Paolo Pietro Catalano, Franco Gattuso, Sergio Rugolino and the scrutineer Martina Giustra “upon recognition of the aggravating circumstance of mafia” and relating to the voting at the “88” polling station in Reggio for the Regional elections of 26 January 2020 and the Municipal elections of 20 and 21 September 2020.
