The Schifani government gives the green light to eleven building redevelopment projects in as many schools on the island. The Special Office for school construction of the Sicilian Region has approved the definitive ranking of the projects financed with over 10 million euros from the 2021-2027 ERDF regional program to make Sicilian schools safer, more accessible and functional, also promoting digital and distance learning.
«With this further intervention – states the regional councilor for education and professional training Mimmo Turano – the Schifani government continues to invest to improve the quality of the school environments that students and teachers experience daily and confirms a concrete commitment to making our schools safer, more inclusive and modern, capable of responding to teaching and training needs. The value of the financed projects exceeds 10 million euros of community funds dedicated to this type of intervention, but we will also add the residual sums so as to finance them in full.”
The interventions concern eleven municipalities in Sicily and involve schools located in the provinces of Messina, Agrigento, Palermo, Catania and Trapani. In the province of Messina, the financed works include: the completion of the IIS “Merendino” building for hotels and Cambridge high school, in Brolo, for an amount of over 1.7 million euros; the modernization of the “Leonardo da Vinci” middle school in Piraino, with safety, systems and accessibility adjustments (325 thousand euros); the completion of the renovation of the middle school in via Baden Powell in Oliveri, with seismic adaptation interventions, energy efficiency and removal of architectural barriers, for over 1.9 million euros; works to reduce seismic risk and the implementation of multimedia equipment in the “AG Roncalli” complex in Montalbano Elicona (593 thousand euros).
In the province of Agrigento, the redevelopment of the outdoor spaces and the outdoor gym of the «G. Galilei” in Santa Elisabetta (688 thousand euros) and the strengthening of the gymnasium of the “Seminario” secondary school in Favara, with interventions on accessibility and external spaces, for an amount of over 348 thousand euros. In the province of Palermo, the following are planned: the replacement of two elevators in the lower secondary school of Corleone (217,652 euros); the completion of the Francesco Minà Palumbo school and the renovation of the gym in Castelbuono, for over 1.7 million euros; the redevelopment of the Prizzi middle school (558 thousand euros). In the province of Catania, the redevelopment of the gym of the IIS «Leonardo» in Giarre is financed for over 1.1 million euros. Finally, in the province of Trapani, the seismic adaptation of the «Luigi Capuana» primary school in the municipality of Vita is planned, for an amount of 1.3 million euros.
