France calls for the resignation of the UN special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese.

The official request to the UN Human Rights Council

“France condemns without any reservation the outrageous and irresponsible words of Mrs. Albanese” pronounced last Saturday, “which target not the Israeli government, whose policy it is permitted to criticize, but Israel as a people and as a nation”, said the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, speaking at the National Assembly in Paris, announcing that France will ask for Albanese’s resignation on February 23 at the UN Human Rights Council.

The letter from the French parliamentarians

In an open letter published yesterday, around forty deputies from the Macron camp had asked the head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noel Barrot, to ask for the resignation of Francesca Albanese, for her words regarding Israel uttered last February 7 during a forum organized by Al-Jazira in Doha.

Among the signatories, deputies such as Constance Le Grip, Olivia Grégoire, Sylvain Maillard or former prime minister Élisabeth Borne.

The reaction of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities

«It is good that a French government voice also adds to ours by inviting us to recognize in the crazy words uttered by Albanese a profound and destructive hatred not only of the right of Israel and the Jewish people to exist, but also of our democracies.

Heavy accusations and international tension

With the closeness shown towards the highest ranks of Hamas, Albanese represents a real danger and it is painful that there are, even in the Italian parliamentary and institutional structure, those who consider her an authentic “rapporteur” to be honoured”.

Thus to ANSA the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities Noemi Di Segni comments on France’s decision to ask for the resignation of the United Nations special rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, on February 23 at the UN Human Rights Council.
