«I have never been a winner inside. I didn’t have and never had the cynicism of a winner. I just liked entertaining people, surprising them with sensational saves. After the first victories which give you the confidence of being at a certain level, I must say that the victory was something that interested me up until then.” The former national team goalkeeper and current head of delegation of the Italian national football team said this: Gianluigi Buffon who received the international sports award «Oreste Granillo».
At the awards ceremony, held in Altafiumara, together with the patron of the Award, the journalist Maurizio Insardà flanked by Italo Cucci, editorial director of Italpress, many exponents of the Calabrian sports world. Other awards went to, Saverio Mirarchi, regional president of the National Amateur League who is also vice president for the Southern Area; to the former sporting director Beppe Ursinofor 27 years at the sporting director of Crotone, and two doctors, Pasquale Favasulidoctor of Reggina for 30 years, and former footballer of the same team, during the presidency of Oreste Granillo, and Capua Pinepresident of the Federal Anti-Doping Commission of the FIGC.
When asked how he is experiencing the current experience with the national team, Buffon defined it as a great opportunity, “which I have decided to live – he added – with great enthusiasm. If only for the type of role that has been covered by people like Gianluca Vialli And Gigi Riva who are two unattainable players in the history of the Azzurri. I am trying – he said again – to take their baton and try to make them regret it as little as possible, to put into this adventure the enthusiasm I have always had for the world of football and also the experience I have gained in 29 years in certain levels.” Who to say thank you to? he was asked. “To many people, of course, but above all to my parents, to my family, who I define as ‘multi-sports’ because they were all involved in various sports, which imprinted the sporting matrix in my DNA.”
