The metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, as part of the ‘Brefotrofio di Reggio Calabria between history and rebirth project. Memoria Ritrovata ‘, has published a public notice for the collection of materials and testimonies aimed at the historical reconstruction and the enhancement of the memory of the former provincial Brefotrofio, now home, of the Palazzo della Cultura and the’ Pasquino Crupi ‘exhibitions, including the permanent collection of works of art confiscated from crime.

The notice is aimed at citizens, families, former guests, operators, scholars and anyone in possession of: historical documents, vintage photographs, personal testimonies, objects, materials or memories related to the life of the former Brefotrofio.

The materials collected will be examined, digitized (where necessary) and can be used, subject to consent, as part of the establishment of an archive of memory at the “P. Crupi” Palace of Culture, in the creation of a public exhibition, in the publication of a historical-documentary catalog.

It is possible to contribute to the project by physically delivering the materials (in original or in copy) to the ‘Pasquino Crupi’ Palazzo della Cultura in via and Cuzzocrea n. 48 in Reggio Calabria, from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00, sending digital copies, possibly also containing oral testimonies, to the address: (email protected). The collection is open until 30 October 2025, except for any extensions.

“Memory is the treasure and custodian of all things and is a source of subsequent thought. With this spirit, instilled by the mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà, for the Palazzo della Cultura, we immediately started a conservation operation of what has been in the past to keep the memory of its original function alive and narrate the history of the palace”. So the metropolitan councilor Filippo Quartuccio, Delegate to culture that adds “the goal is to recover, preserve and enhance the history of the former provincial Brefotrofio through the collection of documents, photographs, oral testimonies and archival materials, thus promoting a collective reflection on the topic of institutionalized childhood and on the value of the social and cultural recovery of the places”. “I hope and invite all citizens, historians, enthusiasts, cultural associations and dedicated institutions – concludes Quartuccio – to contribute to this initiative that we hope will be able to offer a new moment of participation and cultural sharing”
