Two collaborators of justice to strengthen the accusatory system against the former director of the “San Pietro” penitentiary complex, Dr. Maria Carmela Longo. The public prosecutor Annalisa Saccà indicated the names of the two new witnesses: Mario Chindemi, a character with a past close to the Gallico gangs; and Arcangelo Furfaro, exponent of the ‘ndrangheta of Gioia Tauro.

Witnesses will report on favoritism, cell changes and prohibited goods

Both will present in Court their knowledge on the years of alleged favoritism for the inmates of the “San Pietro”, for those people linked to and expressions of organized crime who would have benefited from preferential lanes and concessions. They too will report on the topics already covered by the prosecutor’s witnesses: the change of cell and the possibility – not permitted by penitentiary regulations and procedures – of sharing the cell between co-defendants or family members, the postponement of translations from the Reggio prison to other penitentiary institutions far from home, the entry into “San Pietro” of luxury goods or foodstuffs not permitted by the prison regulations, the living and environmental conditions indicated by several “much more well-off” justice collaborators compared to other national penitentiary institutions.

The exam of the former director Longo is still postponed due to health problems

Yesterday the completion of the exam of the former director Longo as accused was once again postponed. Her state of health does not allow her to be present in Court and submit to the barrage of questions from the parties in the proceedings. When the hearings resume on January 22, the Court will evaluate, medical documentation in hand, whether to reverse the order of witnesses.

The other defendants: a prison doctor and the inmate Caterina Napolitano

In the dock next to the former director of the “San Pietro” and Arghillà who «despite not being part of it» contributed with his professional decisions «to the maintenance and strengthening of the ‘ndrangheta» by accepting requests from prisoners restricted to the high security circuit, there are also a doctor on duty at the “San Pietro” prison, Antonio Pollio, for having drawn up a medical certificate falsely certifying that he had subjected the prisoner Caterina Napolitano to a medical examination, who the third co-accused.
