Targeted checks by the Carabinieri have brought to light an illicit spill of oil waste in Rodì Milici, in the Messina area. During checks carried out in some oil mills in the area, it emerged that part of the washing water and vegetation resulting from the pressing of the olives was poured directly into waterways or onto the ground, in violation of environmental regulations and with the risk of contamination for the surrounding ecosystem.
At the end of the investigations, four people were reported, including owners and partners of the factories involved, and the plants were seized.
The activities are part of a broader control action aimed at combating environmental crimes and protecting the territory, in a period in which the olive oil campaign is in full swing. Investigations are continuing to verify the extent of the damage and any related responsibilities.
