Another star is added to the firmament of the 70th edition of the Taormina Film Festival: the actress Sharon Stone will be the queen of the final evening, in which she will receive the Golden Charybdis for Lifetime Achievement, the glorious honor that over the years has been awarded to the elite of Italian and international cinemato talents such as Jessica Lange, Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Sofia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Richard Gere, Colin Firth, Isabelle Huppert, Gina Lollobrigida, Vittorio Gassman, Nino Manfredi, Alberto Sordi, Monica Vitti. The American actress and producer will meet the press and the public for a conversation on how she has redefined the concept of what it means to be a woman on the big screen, becoming a global cultural icon over the decades. Sharon Stone’s presence at the Taormina Film Festival (promoted by the Department of Tourism, Sport, Entertainment of the Sicilian Region and organized by the Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation, with the support of the Sicilia Film Commission, the municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture) marks his first participation in the prestigious eventwhich already hosted the Italian preview of Basic Instinct in 1992.
The carreer
After making his debut in 1980 with a cult cameo in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories, Stone found his undisputed global consecration during the 90s with films such as Show of forceplaying alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and most notably her iconic role as Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct by Paul Verhoeven, in Phillip Noyce’s thriller, Sliver, in the western Ready to die alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and in Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece Casino, for which she received a Golden Globe for Best Actress and an Oscar nomination. She has continued to work in film and television over the years, earning two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Just Look at the Sky by Peter Chelsom in 1999 and 2000 for Albert Brooks’ The Mighty, won a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for The Practice in 2004. In 2014, Stone was in the cast of the Italian film A golden boydirected by Pupi Avati, and in the role of herself in the introduction of the fifth episode of the series by Paolo Sorrentino The New Pope. Always committed to civil rights issues, Sharon Stone and for almost 30 years she was a spokesperson for amFAR, founded by Elizabeth Taylor to support AIDS research.
