The occupation of the school by approximately 400 students began yesterday at the “Isa Conti Eller Vainicher” high school. A strong decision, developed after months of reflection and comparisons, as explained by the boys in a note. «Today – they write – is not just any day, after years, on the island and in the school of Lipari, we find ourselves faced with an occupation». The students underline that they are well aware of the risks and difficulties of the protest, but that they considered the occupation the only way left to claim fundamental rights. Not only as students, but also as citizens, to remember “what it means to be human”. At the center of the protest there are numerous critical issues, especially of a structural, functional and safety nature. The school building, according to what was reported, is not equipped with compliant escape routes, nor with an evacuation plan made known to students and families. Other critical issues highlighted concern the classrooms “without heating and cooling systems or equipped with non-functioning systems. The low temperatures make it difficult to follow lessons and, in some cases, on rainy days, water seeps into the classrooms”. And also non-operational teaching and laboratory equipment, with potential waste of funds for innovation; lack of space in the face of ever-new sections, with an impact on the environments. For years, the institute has lacked a gym.
