The diocesan library housed within the “Don Rocco Iaria” Episcopal Seminary of Mileto will be named after Don Ignazio Schinella, priest, theologian and scholar who left a profound mark on the ecclesial and cultural life of Calabria.

The decision was taken at the will of the bishop and shared unanimously by the members of the Presbyteral Council meeting on 11 June 2026. The initiative was born from the desire to preserve and pass on the memory of a figure who stood out for the contribution offered to theological reflection, spiritual formation and cultural growth of the territory.

A figure of reference for the Calabrian Church

Don Ignazio Schinella was a professor of moral theology and rector of the Pontifical Seminary “San Pio X” in Catanzaro. During his priestly ministry he combined his academic activity with significant editorial production, publishing numerous volumes dedicated to the themes of ethics, theology and spirituality.

His bond with the figure of Blessed Francesco Mottola was particularly intense, of whom he was an attentive scholar and devoted admirer. From the spiritual and pastoral experience of the Tropean priest, Don Schinella drew inspiration for his own human and ministerial journey.

The dedication next autumn

The naming of the library is part of a broader project to redevelop the spaces of the Episcopal Seminary of Mileto.

The official ceremony is scheduled for next autumn and will see the participation of ecclesiastical, academic and civil authorities, as well as numerous people who over the years have had the opportunity to appreciate the human, cultural and spiritual qualities of Don Ignazio Schinella.

The initiative represents recognition to the memory of a priest who, until his untimely death in 2017, contributed significantly to the training of generations of students and priests, leaving a legacy of reflections and teachings that are still relevant today.
