Smiles and professionalism. Quality of care and innovation in daily choices. Ten years after its foundation, the Medical Oncology Operational Unit of Paola Hospital (CS) celebrates a historic milestone: the birth of the first PICC Nursing Team in Calabria, an excellence that has revolutionized the management of central venous access in the region.

The PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) is a central venous catheter inserted peripherally, usually at the level of the arm, with the aid of ultrasound guidance. Today, thanks to the adoption of the Site Rite 8 system with SherLock 3CG technology, the operator has a device that integrates ECG tracing and electromagnetic tracking, ensuring greater precision in catheter positioning. But also the reduction of malpositioning and optimal safety for the patient. This system represents a true technological jewel, the result of innovative ideas and advanced clinical applications.

The project was strongly supported by Dr. Gianfranco Filippelli, head of the Medical Oncology Unit, promoter of the company resolution which sanctioned the official birth of the team and also, in those years, Extraordinary Commissioner of the ASP of Cosenza.
Leading the PICC Team is coordinator Gianluigi Aloia, supported by a group of highly qualified professionals such as Maurilio Piluso, Valentino Gibertoni and Massimo Giordano. In a statement, Gianluigi Aloia expressed deep gratitude to the strategic corporate direction of the ASP of Cosenza, underlining how the success of the PICC Team inspired the creation of new multidisciplinary teams called “Vascular Team”, dedicated to the management of vascular access throughout the healthcare company.
The vascular access clinic, now fully operational, was made possible not only by the company resolution but also by a generous donation from the Diego Pugliese Foundation. In honor of the contribution received, the clinic was named after Pugliese, a symbol of commitment and support for local healthcare.

This anniversary is not just a celebration, but a starting point for new challenges and goals. Paola’s PICC Team continues to represent a virtuous model of innovation, competence and humanity in the care of cancer patients.
